to avoid any serious injury and the gunshots did kill the officer. the car backed away and the student officer exited the patrol car and began shooting and returning fire to the suspect vehicle. >> the attack happened in the city's mostly residential central district. police say the other officer in the car suffered minor injuries. this is the first time a seattle officer has died in the line of duty since 2006. police in cleveland say the six decomposing bodies found in a suspected rapist's home were all female and they were all victims of homicide. anthony sole was arrested on rape charges and when police went to to arrest him last week police found the bodies. they're trying to learn the identities of the victims.

sowell was released from prison in 2005 after serving 15 years for rape. rescuers say there is no more reason to hope that any survivors will be found three days after a coast guard plane and marine helicopter collided. they're ending the search for nine missing people off the coast of san diego. witnesses say a massive fireball fell into the pacific ocean after the collision. >> we looked at the time that was involved. we looked at the nature of the collision itself. we exhaustively searched the area where we would have found them if there was anybody that had survived it. you look at the cold-water exposure models as far as the time goes, and when you put all those pieces together we no longer believer that there's any chance that somebody could still be alive. >> search crews made one final pass of the scene this morning. family members were told last night that the effort would be abandoned after that sweep was completed. the only challenger in the afghan presidential race is pulling out. abdullah abdullah claims next

saturday's runoff will be just as rigged as the initial voting. >> the only way to decide that this country will be through free and fair elections. so my message is loud and clear to the enemies of democratic process and through all our commitment to these principles and values we will disappoint anybody who would like to become an obstacle to us and the process. >> a government commissioner arranged the runoff after finding large-scale vote fraud in the august presidential election. incumbent hamid karzai claimed victory. secretary of state hillary clinton says the runoff vote will be legitimate even without the opposition leader taking part. abdullah's withdrawal from the runoff election comes as president obama weighs his options for the war in afghanistan. so far the white house says the decision will not complicate the president's review of war strategy. appearing on abc's "this week,"

presidential adviser valerie jarrett didn't say whether abdullah's withdrawal would speed, up or delay the president's decision on troop levels. job creation and economic growth. that's what treasury secretary timothy geithner says the obama administration is folking on. in an appearance on nbc's "meet the press" today, geithner refused to say if achieving either of those goals will mean higher taxes. >> what hard charges have been made so far? are you going to raise taxes? >> we're going to have to bring our resources and our expenditures more into balance. >> so, it's possible. >> well, again, the president's committed to make sure we get this coming back on track. we're bringing -- >> you talked about hard choices, so why can't you give a straight answer to whether taxes have to come up when you have a deficit this big? >> because, david, right now we're focused on getting growth back on track. okay? and we're not at the point yet to decide what that's going to take. i want to say this clearly. he was committed in the campaign, he said in the campaign, and he is committed to make sure we do this in a way

that's not going to add to a burden on people making less than $250,000. now it's going to be hard to do that but he's committed to do that and we can do that. >> geithner also said while the economy has been recovering, the recovery has been shaky and uneven. you've heard a lot about a government-run insurance plan and the house version of health care reform. this so-called public option. the congressional budget office estimates that only 2% of americans under the age of 65 would use that option. the cbo also estimates that the vast majority of americans would keep their private insurers if the house bill becomes law. the cbo is a nonpartisan economic analyst. the health insurance industry is questioning its findings. chrysler is trying to trim its workforce even more. it's offering buyouts to 23,000 employees. the automaker says workers who qualify will have until november 13th to accept the deal. chrysler says it will determine who qualifies based on operational needs and that termination dates would be at its discretion.

chrysler emerged from choopter 11 bankruptcy protection in june. at the time it said it would close some u.s. plants as part of its reorganization. chrysler is expected to reveal its five-year recovery plan wednesday. the philippines battered by a typhoon for the fourth time in just over a month. this storm has killed 20 people. four others are missing. typhoon miranai is expected to hit the central coast of vietnam tomorrow. the two countries are still reeling from typhoon ketsana, which slammed ma nil will with its worst flooding in 40 years and killed 160 people in vietnam during late september. good sunday to you. i'm reynolds wolf for hln. this is a look at your forecast across the nation. we're going to get things started with the east then make your way back to the west. the eastern seaboard expects a few scattered showers, maybe a boom of thunder but nothing too heavy. then farther back into the ohio valley, high pressure building in. with that, we can expect some sunshine in places like

angles tonight. an iraqi immigrant accused of running down his daughter because she was too westernized is back in arizona after trying to leave the u.s. u.s. marshals arrested the man at the atlanta airport thursday. he flew to the united kingdom but was denied entrance to that country and returned to the u.s. he is accused of hitting his daughter with his car because he didn't think she was living her life according to traditional iraqi values. noor almaleki remains hospitalized. a commercial flight about to depart from cypress to athens, greece, had an unexpected delay. the jet was set to take off when a 28-year-old man opened a rear exit and slid down an emergency chute. he then jumped the airport fence and disappeared. authorities don't know why he bolted from the plane but they have issued an arrest warrant for him.

human desire for freedom. >> kohl called the fall of the berlin wall his proudest moment as chancellor. two men accused in a terrorism investigation face an extradition hearing in canada tomorrow. they were arrested in windsor ontario, across the border from detroit. they're suspected of being involved with an islamic cleric who died in a shoot-out with the fbi last week. the son of the imam killed in that shooting was also arrested in windsor. the fbi says a two-year investigation concluded that the three men conspired to commit federal crimes. at least seven people died in attacks across iraq today. about 40 miles south of baghdad, a bomb strapped to a motorcycle exploded in a crowded marketplace, killing three five people. at least 37 people were injured in that attack. in the western city of ramadi, two people died when two separate car bombs detonated near the headquarters of the traffic police. eight others were wounded in that attack. iraqi authorities say the suspect in a deadly bombing

killed someone during a police interrogation. the interior ministry says he grabbed a gun from a guard and shot an investigator. the investigator wrestled the gun back and shot the suspect. they both died of gunshot wounds. the suspect also wounded the guard he took the gun from. investigators were questioning him about last sunday's bombing in baghdad that killed at least 160 people. that was iraq's deadliest bombing since 2007. iranian president mahmoud ahmadinejad compares the power of his country's enemies to that of a mosquito. ahmadinejad's comment come as iran negotiates with the west over its nuclear program. a u.n. plan now would require iran to send more than a ton of uranium, about 70% of its stockpile, to russia. it would be processed there then sent back to iran for use in a research reactor but not in nuclear weapons. roman polanski's attorney says he's ready to file a new bail offer, one that includes what he says is a very significant cash amount. he wouldn't say how much.

swiss authorities rejected a bail offer friday because they considered the 76-year-old filmmaker a flight risk. the earlier offer was not in cash. polanski was arrested in late september. he is wanted in the u.s. for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in los angeles back in 1977. polanski fled the u.s. before sentencing. the first instant replay call in world series history not only changed the momentum of game three, it helped the new york yankees rally to victory. they came from behind to take game three 8-5. the yankee turnaround started when alex rodriguez lined up a shot to the right field corner. it was initially ruled a double, but the head umpire overruled the call saying it was a homer after reviewing the play on instant replay. he said the ball hit a tv camera, which was over the outfield wall in the front row of the stands. the yankees now lead the series 2-1. the world's largest cruise ship is so big it had to lower its smokestacks in order to squeeze under a bridge. it's tough to see in this nighttime video, but the "oasis

welcome to hln "news and views" on this first sunday in november. i'm melissa long. a seattle police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty overnight. at a news conference early this morning, a police spokesman described what happened. >> they were going over some training when the car pulled up alongside of them and began shooting. the student officer in the driver's seat ducked and was able to avoid any serious injury and the gunshots did kill the officer. the car backed away and the student officer exited the patrol car and began shooting and returning fire to the suspect vehicle. >> the attack happened in the city's mostly residential central district. police say the other officer in the car suffered minor injuries. this is the first time a seattle officer has died in the line of

duty since 2006. police in cleveland say the six decomposing bodies found in a suspected rapist home were all female and they were all victims of homicide. anthony sowell was arrested on rape and assault charges and when police went to arrest him last week, they found the bodies. authorities are checking missing persons reports dating back to june of 2005. they're trying to learn the identities of the victims. sowell was released from pris nn in after serving 15 years for rape. there is no hope for survivors to be found after a collision ending the search for nine missing people off the coast of san diego. witnesses say as massive fireball fell into the pacific ocean after the collision. >> we looked at the time that was involved. we looked at the nature of the collision itself. we exhaustively searched the area where we would have found them if there was anybody that could survive it.

you look at the cold water exposure models as far as time goes and when you put those pieces together, we no longer believe that there's any chance that someone could still be alive. >> search crews made one final pass of the scene this morning. family members were told last night that the effort would be abandoned after that sweep was completed. the only challenger in the afghan presidential race is pulling out. abdullah abdullah claims next week's runoff will be just as rigged as the initial voting. >> the only way to decide in this country will be through free and fair elections so my message is loud and clear to enemies of democratic process and through our commitment to these principles and values we'll disappoint anyone who would like to become an obstacle to the process. >> a government commission arranged the runoff after finding large scale vote fraud in the august presidential

economic analyst. the health insurance industry is questioning its findings. chrysler is trying to trim its workforce more offering boy buyouts to 23,000 employees. they have until november 13th to accept the deal. chrysler will determine who qualifies by operational needs and termination dates will be at its discretion. in june it said it would close some u.s. plants as part of its reorganization. chrysler is expected to reveal the five-year recovery plan wednesday. the philippines battered by a typhoon for the fourth time in just over a month. this storm has killed 20 people. four others are missing. the typhoon is now moving over the south china sea and is expected to hit the central coast of vietnam tomorrow. the two countries are still reeling from a tafyphoon which killed more than 160 people in

in the western city of ramadi two people died when two separate car bombs detonated. eight others were wounded in that attack. iraqi authorities say a suspect in a deadly bombing killed someone during a police interrogation. the interior ministry said he grabbed a gun from a guard and shot an investigator. the investigator wrestled the gun back and shot the suspect. they both died of gunshot wounds. the suspect also wounded the guard he took the guard from. investigators were questioning him about last sunday's bombing in baghdad that killed at least 160 people. that was iraq's deadliest bombing since 2007. iranian president mahmoud ahmadinejad compares the power of his country's enemies to that of a mosquito. ahmadinejad's comment comes as iran negotiates with the west over its nuclear program. a u.n. plan now would require iran to send more than a ton of uranium, about 70% of its stockpile, to russia. it would be processed there and sent back to iran for use in a

research reactor but not in nuclear weapons. roman polanski's attorney says he's ready to file a new bail offer. one that includes what he says is a very significant cash amount. he wouldn't say how much. swiss authorities rejected a bail offer friday because they consider the 76-year-old filmmaker a flight risk. the earlier offer was not in cash. polanski was arrested in late september. he's wanted in the u.s. for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in los angeles back in 1977. polanski fled the u.s. before sentencing. a senior adviser to president obama says the supply of the h1n1 vaccine will catch up to demand within a week. david axelrod said vaccine makers were mistaken earlier this year when they said they would have 40 million doses near the end of october. the real number was 28 million doses. thousands of people including some from canada jammed clinics in washington to get vaccinated free of charge. more people are going to

ireporters says she saw something really spookkey. see what she saw on the queen marry. the world's largest cruise liner has neat features, what it has to do to go under a bridge. hello welcome to hln news and views in this first sunday in november. i'm alissa long. a seattle police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty overnight. at a news conference early this morning, a police spokesman described what happened. >> they were going over some training when the car pulled up alongside of them and began shooting. the student officer in the driver's seat ducked, was able to avoid any serious injury, and the gunshots did kill the officer. the car backed away, and the student officer exited the patrol car and began shooting

and returning fire to the suspect vehicle. >> the attack happened in the city's mostly residential central district. police say the other officer in the car suffered minor injuries. this is the first time a seattle officer has died in the line of duty since 2006. police in cleveland say the six decomposing bodies found in a suspected rapist's home were all female and they were all victims of homicide. anthony sole was arrested on rain and assault charges. and when police went to his home to arrest him last week, police found the bodies. they found them from missing reports dated back to 2005. they're trying to learn the identities of the victims. sowell was released from prison in 2005 after serving 15 years for rape. rescuers say there is no more reason to hope that any survivors will be found three days after a coast guard plane and marine helicopter collided. they're ending the search for nine missing people off the coast of san diego. witnesses say a massive fireball fell into the pacific ocean after the collision.

>> we looked at the time that was involved. we looked at the nature of the collision itself. we exhaustively searched the area where we would have found them if there was anybody that could have survived it. you look at the cold-water exposure models as far as the time goes, and when you put all those pieces together, we no longer believer that there's any chance that somebody could still be alive. >> search crews made one final pass of the scene this morning. family members were told last night that the effort would be abandoned after that sweep was completed. the only challenger in the afghan presidential race is pulling out. abdullah abdullah claims next saturday's runoff will be just as rigged as the initial voting. >> the only way to decide that this setting in this country will be through free and fair elections. so my message is loud and clear to the enemies of democratic process and through all our commitment to these principles

and values we will disappoint anybody who would like to become an obstacle to us and the process. >> a government commissioner arranged the runoff after finding large-scale vote fraud in the august presidential election. incumbent hamid karzai claimed victory. secretary of state hillary clinton says the runoff vote will be legitimate even without the opposition leader taking part. abdullah's withdrawal from the runoff election comes as president obama weighs his options for the war in afghanistan. so far the white house says the decision will not complicate the president's review of war strategy. appearing on abc's "this week," presidential adviser valerie jarrett didn't say whether abdullah's withdrawal would speed up or delay the president's decision on troop levels. job creation and economic growth. that's what treasury secretary timothy geithner says the obama administration is focusing on. in an appearance on nbc's "meet the press" today, geithner refused to say if achieving either of those goals will mean higher taxes.

>> what hard charges have been made so far? are you going to raise taxes? >> we're going to have to bring our resources and our expenditures more into balance. >> so, it's possible. >> well, again, the president's committed to make sure we get this economy back on track. we're bringing -- >> you talked about hard choices, so why can't you give a straight answer to whether taxes have to come up when you have a deficit this big? >> because, david, right now we're focused on getting growth back on track. okay? and we're not at the point yet we have to decide exactly what it's going to take. i want to say this clearly. he was committed in the campaign, he said in the campaign, and he is committed to make sure we do this in a way that's not going to add to a burden on people making less than $250,000. now it's going to be hard to do that but he's committed to do that and we can do that. >> geithner also said while the economy has been recovering, the recovery has been shaky and uneven. chrysler is trying to trim its workforce even more.

it's offering buyouts to 23,000 employees. the automaker says workers who qualify will have until november 13th to accept the deal. chrysler says it will determine who qualifies based on operational needs and that termination dates would be at its discretion. chrysler emerged from chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in june. at the time, it said it would close some u.s. plants as part of its reorganization. chrysler is expected to reveal its five-year recovery plan wednesday. the philippines battered by a typhoon for the fourth time in just over a month. this storm has killed 20 people. four others are missing. typhoon miranai is expected to hit the central coast of vietnam tomorrow and moving over the south china sea. the two countries are still reeling from typhoon ketsana, which slammed the capitol manila, with its worst flooding in 40 years and killed 160 people in vietnam during late september. it seems things are always

police say as many as 10 people were involved in a rain that happened at a homecoming dance allegedly. five people were arrested and a sixth person taken into custody

three world leaders who were in power when the berlin wall fell nearly 20 years ago were honored in germany's capital. former president george h.w. bush, the former soviet president, mikhail gorbachev, and former german chancellor hamid kohl attended this ceremony. president bush said the wall's collapse had more to do with the determination of everyday people than the power of governments. >> the historic events we are gathered to celebrate were set in motion not in bonn or moscow or in washington but rather in the hearts and minds of people who had too long been deprived their god given rights. and the wall could confine them from loved ones and lock them in a failing economic system, but in the end, it could not extinguish the embers of their undying hope or harness their human desire for freedom. >> kohl called the fall of the berlin wall his proudest moment as chancellor. two men accused in a terrorism investigation face an extradition hearing in canada tomorrow. they were arrested in windsor,

ontario, across the border from detroit. they're suspected of being involved with an islamic cleric who died in a shoot-out with the fbi last week. the son of the imam killed in that shooting was also arrested in windsor. the fbi says a two-year investigation concluded that the three men conspired to commit federal crimes. at least seven people died in attacks across iraq today. about 40 miles south of baghdad, a bomb strapped to a motorcycle exploded in a crowded marketplace, killing three five people. at least 37 people were injured in that attack. in the western city of ramadi, two people died when two separate car bombs detonated near the headquarters of the traffic police. eight others were wounded in that attack. iraqi authorities say the suspect in a deadly bombing killed someone during a police interrogation. the interior ministry says he grabbed a gun from a guard and shot an investigator. the investigator wrestled the gun back and shot the suspect. they both died of gunshot wounds. the suspect also wounded the guard he took the gun from.

investigators were questioning him about last sunday's bombing in baghdad that killed at least 160 people. that was iraq's deadliest bombing since 2007. iranian president mahmoud ahmadinejad compares the power of his country's enemies to that of a mosquito. ahmadinejad's comment come as iran negotiates with the west over its nuclear program. a u.n. plan now would require iran to send more than a ton of uranium, about 70% of its stockpile, to russia. it would be processed there, then sent back to iran for use in a research reactor but not in nuclear weapons. roman polanski's attorney says he's ready to file a new bail offer, one that includes what he says is a very significant cash amount. he wouldn't say how much. swiss authorities rejected a bail offer friday because they considered the 76-year-old filmmaker a flight risk. the earlier offer was not in cash. polanski was arrested in late september. he is wanted in the u.s. for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in los angeles back in

1977. polanski fled the u.s. before sentencing. senior advisor to president obama that says supply of the h1n1 vaccine will catch up to demand within a week. david axelrod says vaccine makers were mistaken earlier this year when they told the administration they would have 40 million doses ready near the end of october. the real number was about 28 million doses. thousands of people including some from canada jammed clinics in washington to get vaccination free of charge. the first instant replay call in world series history not only changed the momentum of game three, it helped the new york yankees rally to victory. they came from behind to take game three 8-5. the yankee turnaround started when alex rodriguez lined up a shot to the right field corner. it was initially ruled a double, but the head umpire overruled the call, saying it was a homer after reviewing the play on instant replay. he said the ball hit a tv camera, which was over the outfield wall in the front row of the stands. the yankees now lead the series 2-1. the world's largest cruise

get this. 100% of credit cards offered online that's all credit cards offered online continue to include practices that will be outlawed once tougher new rules go into effect next year, that's according to the pugh health group's safe credit cards project. there's talk of moving up the date these new regulations would go into effect. for more on that, we turn to john the president of consumer information for credit.com. great to see you. >> likewise thank you for having me. >> as you know congress is jawboning endlessly, how they want to move up this date for credit card s credit cards into effect. are we getting anywhere on that? >> it depends who you listen to gerry. if you listen to congress, yes, is there some traction and movement fomove up the im men implementation date from february 2010 to december first, 2009. if you listen to the american

bankers association, they're screaming chicken little, the sky is falling, if you do this to us, there's no way we can comply. i think you will see the date staying in february of next year, because i don't believe there's any way the credit card industry can implement all these changes and fully comply with the card act in essentially less than six weeks. >> wow. there are a lot of goodies in this act for customers a lot of ways to help you pay for that credit card. let's talk about those. >> sure. some of the rules changing, this is groundbreaking legislation it truly is. consumers under 21 who could have gotten themselves into credit card debt are now going goingtongoing to be unable to open a credit card unless they can prove they've the capacity to make the payments. the one i really really love you now have to tell your credit card issuer yes i will allow you to approve a transaction that puts me into an over the

credit limit position and therefore you can hit me with a 35 to $39 fee. today, it's willy-nilly, the wild wild west if you go over your limit, they can nail you with that fee. >> lots of other goodies when it comes to raising rates. we will talk a little more about that. as you know, it's hard to do with without a credit card or banking account. the cost these products and what you pay in fees may be more than you bargained for. some of the most frustrating tee fees out there are the ones charged by your bank. >> reporter: harold abrams was furious at his bank. >> i was furious, they're charging me $35 for an expense that was $5.65. it's really -- it's crazy. >> reporter: bank of america charged abrams a total of $105 in overdraft protection fees cover three charges to his checking account totaling less than 15 bucks. abrams would rather his transactions be declined than

pay the tab. he didn't know it existed. >> what's the $8.40 for? >> stamps postage. >> add it up it's $105. >> reporter: according to a survey of fees conducted, most consumer fees are on the rise. >> fees have gone up year in year out over the past decade. some fees go up at a faster pace than others. atm surcharges in particular increase at a rate far faster than the cost of inflation. >> use an atm at your own bank no problem, no fees step outside that network, you pay fees big time average of $2.22, an increase of 12.6% over last year. guess what? it gets worse. your bank charges you fees, too, for a total fee of $3.54 for accessing your own money. if you have an interest bearing account and fail to keep your high minimum balance, the fee jumped 5% to $12.25.

overdraft fees were up last year, too. fees for bouncing a check rose 2%. bank of america told cnn it's changed its overdraft policies just this month. no longer will it charge overdraft fees when a customer's account is overdrawn for a total amount less than $10 and won't impose more than four overdraft fees in a single day. elizabeth warren who chairs congress's oversight committee says fees are the real way banks make their money. >> the truth is there will be another fee tomorrow and another the day after and another the day after that because they're all hidden you can't find them. the first time most people discover them is when they have to pay them. >> abrams complained to the bank twice before going to the top and writing a letter to then ceo, ken lewis and that made the difference. his fees were removed but the frustration remains. >> i really think it's unfair, especially coming from in light of what's going on with the banks now they're being bailed out by the government.

i think they have some kind of responsibility to consumers. >> back with us john from credit.com. we've seen a lot of trouble in the market recently. people have noticed their credit limits are dropping credit charges, particularly interest rising. the pugh study we talked about a minute ago say rates have gone up 20% in the first two quarters of this year a big, big change. are these credit card operators just trying to get in front of that law change? >> gerri thick you nailed i. they're trying to remold what their cardholder base looks like today because they recognize in february of next year or possibly december of this year they are not going to be able to do so with the same amount of ease as today. absolutely. that's why you're seeing these activities crushed within this 12 to 18 month period because they recognize next year much more difficult to do so. >> john has the business model

changed now? is it true banks are getting so much of their income from consumer fees they just can't give them up? >> yeah. you look -- it's become addictive, gerry it really has. fees are a 20 billion with a "b," $20 billion revenue channel for these very large banks. they're going to fight tooth and nail to not give up these fees. they're very very clever. these guys aren't dumb. if they're doing away with one fee or limiting one fee, like whack a ball they charge something else. like the gentleman on the piece a minute ago, he did something, going into an overdraft position they want to punish him for, 35 bucks for every time he did i. there are conveniences like atm fee or foreign transaction fee they're charging you for the convenience of using their particular card. >> let's talk about the sneaky contribution they're doing right now to really build their income. what are you seeing in the marketplace that's costing

consumers more? >> what we're seeing is the brass ring of fear, if you will is the increase in interest rate. people don't recognize that as a fee sometimes, if you're paying $5 for your money versus $1.50 for your money, that is in some people's eyes a fee. i remember when i used to use an atm, the fee was 75 cents, today, it's a comical amount and now in the 3-4, $5 range you become almost accepting when you can be more strategic about the credit card you use or service you use at a bank or most importantly, who you do your banking with. there are certainly banks and credit unions that aren't doing these types of things because they didn't take the massive bite out of the sub-prime mortgage industry and don't have to juice the consumer to get back. >> what can you do if you're in a situation where your fees have gone through the roof and you can't afford it? >> look, banks recognize it's

inconvenient and not fun to switch financial institutions. but if you have got onto a point you are flat out sick and tired of the fees and treatment you are getting from your bank or credit card issuer take your business elsewhere. >> wow. >> it's the most difficult thing to do gerri, acquire a good customer and you really do have the lever averaged upper hand. take your business to credit union or local bank who isn't doing these types of things. >> john, love that. use your leverage. >> don't go anywhere up next, more hidden fees and what you can do about them and a complete guide to bartering, how to score the very best deals.

fees, fees and more fees by some estimates the average american spends between $2,000 and $4,000 a year in fees they didn't even know they were paying, and the cost of these hidden fees can really take a toll on your wallet in the long run. from cell phones to cable service. to credit cards and banks. to airline travel and hotel stays. experts say the average american is spending close to $1,000 a year extra on hidden fees and surcharges. a nickel here, a dime there. >> that's real money and married couples were talking about $2,000. that's a nice chunk of change a to stock a healthy requirement, a nice vacation, get a head start on school costs.

>> reporter: bob sullivan, author of "the red tape chronicles." >> almost every transaction, buying a car, buying a house, getting a cell phone, the company knows far much more than you do, including they know what the real cost is, and when there is all this confusion over what things cost, well, consumers lose. >> reporter: they're losing in a big way. the average fee ranges from less than a dollar to $10. while that may not seem like a lot of money, it adds up. cell phone fees average $9.40 per month, more than $116 a year. cable and satellite tv fees on average run $9.52 a month totaling $114 a year. every time you fly, $33.44 with a national average of 3.5 tickets a year, that totals $102 a year. credit card fees are $7.72 a month, bringing the annual cost to $92. and the average fee incurred for a hotel stay is close to $25, roughly $95 a year per person.

boren hanson is a professor at nyu's certainty for hospitality. he says hotels have become more creative in what he calls the surprise fee. >> the hotels in 2008 collected about $1.75 billion on fees and surcharges. some fees that surprise guests the most would be an early departure fee. a cancellation fee. mini bar restocking charges. luggage or baggage holding fees. >> reporter: some hotels go as far as charging resort amenity fees for towels and some urban hotels charge a daily fee for receiving faxes. surprise fees, hidden fees, it all adds up. back with us is john ulzheimer. from credit.com. you can the ask the total cost on what you are buying is going to be? right? >> i'm waiting for the day to walk up the aisle at 33,000 and put a dime into the bathroom to get in. the question is, what is your breaking point? that's a question we have to ask

ourselves. am i willing to pay a buck for this, two bucks for this? 9 bucks for this if the answer is yes, fine they have you. if the answer is no, you have to do research. it's called fine print for a reason. they don't want you to see the fee that you could avoid in many situations. >> john, let me ask you this, because i know a lot of people think, you know what, i'm not going to pay that. but if you don't pay that, doesn't that hurt your credit score? >> ah, very, very good point. choose to lose the battle and continue to win the credit war. if you're implemented with a fee u that you have contractual liability for, for example, breaking a cell phone contract early and hit you for the remainder of the cell phone -- >> drives me. >> pay it, pay it. you don't want a collection on the credit report. good point. >> also, i mean, you can't put your head in the sand about this. with overdraft fees in particular, you can't ignore this. you have to be proactive. you have to make sure you're getting the alerts to your cell phone. what else can you do so you know ahead of time what you're being charged?

>> it is a matter of focusing on your statements every month and really being more engaged with the accounts in an online environment to see, look, i'm approaching the credit limit. getting the point i don't have more funds in the checking account and going into an overdraft position and it is a responsibility of the financial institution or service provider and us as the customer to make sure we stay away from the fee. >> i love that. john, thank you so much. great to see you again. >> thank you, gerri. in tough times, is bartering the way to go? we'll tell you when to do it and what to look out for.

joining us now from washington. janet, tell us why you think bartering is so popular now. >> well, a couple of things, gerri. first of all, it is a good deal and seeing on sites like craigslist and that sort of thing the interest is just increasing by leaps and bounds. and aside from the fact to get good deals, apparently, it is fun. people actually like this. they like to do deals. so why not? >> i know people who do this all the time. they'll trade, like, i'm redoing my bathroom, i have somebody who knows how to do that work, and they come over and i exchange something else for them. people do it informally but increasingly people are doing it online. what are the good websites? >> well, there are a couple here. there are a number of them. one is called battererquest, one is called barterbee. on our website, our home page, kiplinger.com, we list them all and tell what services each offer. people can go on there and look. but the sites are taking advantage of the interest, the very growing interest in this so people can post their goods and services that they have up for barter. >> is it buyer beware, though?

i would think that it might be dangerous. >> yes. >> because you really don't know the person you're bartering with. >> exactly. that's the thing. we have at kiplinger.com, we'll tell you which sites do the limited amount of vetting of people. you might sort of want their name and address. and obviously if you're really looking for a serious service like for a baby sitting service or something like that i'm not sure that this would be the best way to go. go. you would want to start first with your neighborhood people so that you could barter with them. people that you know and know their reputations and final out their background. >> how do i handle this with the irs? if it's income do you have to tell the federal government? >> well it could be -- if you're just doing this occasionally, probably you're okay. if it's something that you -- if you really get into it and you do it a lot, you need to go to the irs website and they can give you all the rules. if you're a business and doing

this reoutinely and trading business, it probably does count as business income. so if you're -- if you're an accidental barterer versus someone that does it all the time. >> can i save a lot of money doing this? >> it's interesting. some of the examples that we used in our story we used someone whoa traded of all things a clothes dryer for a table saw. or we were talking about leases and maybe cell phone contracts people get involved in and are tired of their car lease, sometimes you can barter this. so there are ways to get out of things early. so that's very interesting. when i was getting my makeup done the makeup artist was saying i would like to barter my

>> now from his radio studio, your money expert clark howard. >> why am i smiling? when you hear what i'm going to talk about you'll think, have i lost my mind? foreclosure rates are likely to rise according to experts the rest of this year through 2010. but i don't believe it. in spite of the fact that increasing numbers of americans are dleen quenlt on home loans throughout the first half of this year the idea of doing a short sale where a lender agrees to negotiate a lower selling price for a house and they take a hit was something that talked about that didn't happen. real estate agents were frustrated beyond belief. now to the benefit of homeowners and banks and especially for

people buying homes short sales are actually working. so are we going to see the millions and millions of foreclosures? i don't think so. but are there going to be great deals on houses? you better believe it. get out there and find the deals. and now what's on your mind in what deal are you dealing with? nancy, how are you? >> caller: i'm fine. i got a letter yesterday and my husband worked for a big corporation for 32 years. they are telling me now that since october of '04, to 2009 of april, they found a mistake on his pension money. and what it is it's $450 a month and they want me to pay that through those years, plus interest. >> wait, wait, wait, wait a

minute. you're telling me the pension administrator, five years ago almost five years ago, made a mistake in computation? >> caller: right. >> paid $450 too much. they say now they want what is that over -- >> caller: that's close to $25,000. >> and they want all $25,000 -- >> caller: plus interest. >> for their error. how do you know they even did make a mistake? >> caller: i went back through his retirement papers and i did find that it states when he turned 62 if he's drawing social security they would take $450 off of his check a month. and he got sick in early 2000. he had a disease which did a number on his brain which causes dementia. well, if he had been in his right mind, he would have known that this was supposed to happen

and he would have called. i haven't been in this position in over 20 years, where i owed anybody anything. >> the company that your husband worked for, for the 32 years, was he a union employee or not? >> caller: yes, he was. >> okay. have you consulted the union? >> caller: no. >> all right. i would request of you that you contact the union that he worked for, because if they did this to your husband and many other members, the union should get involved. the union should be his and his fellow retiree's advocates in dealing with the pension administrator for messing up and coming up with a reasonable way for that money to be recouped. i would like for you to double back with me once you've talked to the union, and if the union is not of help to you, and the other retires, i would like to see what i might be able to do to be of help.

lola what's happened? >> caller: to make a long story short, there was this young man that my daughter knew and he ended up homeless gave us a sad story. he brought him to our home to give him a place to live settled up on the rent and he was working not too long after that the transmission went out on his car. i felt sorry for him because he did not have a way to work. i had just got the transmission fixed in my truck and i told him he could use my truck as long as he promised me one thing he would never drink and drive my truck. well needless to say, he wrecked my truck he did over $3,000 worth of damage to it, and got a dwi thrown in jail, and my truck was impounded. well, he paid about half of it and once i moved, of course now

he's not making payments he refuses to answer my calls, he refuses to do anything. >> all right, let's talk for a second. first thing i want to tell you, don't ever give up that wonderful heart of yours. >> caller: okay. >> you can sue him in small claims court for the $1,500 still unpaid. >> caller: okay. >> and you would file suit the filing fees in most jurisdictions are not that high. >> caller: okay. >> and he's going to have to explain to the judge why he's being such a dead beat. >> caller: okay. and it will be up to the judge, because a lot of what you're talking about is not in writing. you didn't get a note from him -- >> caller: yes, i do. i do i do. i have a signed piece of paper that he promised to restore my truck and pay all the damages.

stay with the feds, you're going to love this. it is an income based repayment plan. after 10 years 'em ployment with the feds all your federal loans, whatever is the balance of those will be forgiven. here's what i want you to do. pay the minimum that's required under the income based plan towards your federal loans and throw every last dollar you can towards your private loans. and it's a big priority for you. on the student loan front here's my rule. if you are in school, parents of kids getting ready to go to college, do not in four years, take out more student loan debt in total than what your likely earnings are going to be in the first year's employment after college. use that as a maximum ceiling how much money you'll borrow. you'll thank me later if you

follow that. you have a complaint about one of the giant cell phone companies. what have they done to you, alberto? >> caller: clark, i recently purchased a wireless card for my computer because i was moving to -- i was going to mention woe to pack my belongings. i managed a resort that closed down due to the financial crisis. i downloaded a movie and they billed me for $62,000. >> wait, wait, wait, wait. how much for downloading this movie? >> caller: $62,000. >> $62,000 to download a single movie. what did they tell you? >> caller: they adjusted it to $17,000, which they told me was their cost. for the movie "wally" by disney

that my nephew wanted to watch. not only that, clark, but after we got to the $17,000, they said that they were going to cancel my cellular phone which was also with them. and i was never told of the consequences of downloading a movie overseas because they charge by mega bites rather than by roaming minutes. >> how high up in the bureaucracy in this company have you gone to? >> i've sent a let tore the chairman and chief executive officer, the general vice president and general counsel. >> what answers have you received? >> caller: none other than a call by supposedly a customer care professional that told me the bill was fair and equitable. >> wait a minute they said the bill is fair and equitable at a

lucky as alberto. so be careful. what risk are you at of identity theft? we hear so much about it. you see all the commercials about how there's this great way for you to keep your identity from being stolen and all that stuff. but how would you figure out how much risk you are actually at? there's now a mathematical formula for free you can run yourself through and see how much risk you're actually under based on your profile of having your identity stolen. you go to a website called myidscore.com, fill out a short amount of information about yourself, and if you're trusting enough, your social security number. i chose to put it in there and guess what it showed for me? i was at pretty high risk of

identity risk. but check out your number and see if you need to make more precautions. i've been on the air 22 years and just when i think i've heard it all i hear something you're not going to believe. the call you're going to hear next is one that combines two of my least favorite things, payday loans and bill collectors. and wait till you hear this story. michael is with us. how are you doing? >> caller: doing great, clark. how are you? >> wonderful, thank you. you have some collectors that are bugging you. let's talk about them. >> caller: about six years ago my wife and i got into some financial problems and she made a very bad decision. she did a payday loan over the internet. >> oh. >> caller: yeah. it was no problem. we got it taken care of and

everything. but six years after that she gets a call at work from someone representing a bogus bank. it turned out they were from the philippines. they told her if she didn't give them her credit card number and pay a certain amount they were going to have the cops come down and arrest her. >> really? >> caller: yes, that was six months ago. they started calling back again -- >> the same people from the philippines calling you? >> caller: yes. at this point they're calling up family members and stuff and -- >> they're calling your family members? >> caller: yeah. >> what are they saying. >> just my wife needs to call them. >> so they're not telling family members your wife owes money? >> caller: they're saying she owes money and needs to call them. >> that's against the law. >> caller: yeah, i've went to the police but since it is out

of the country, there's not much they can do about it. so what happened was i had their number and i started calling them. i told them we weren't going to pay any money and i started having fun with them and they got mad and they were talking about how they were going to come and cut my wife's hands off and -- >> what? they said they were going to cut your wife's hands off? >> caller: yeah, and some other things i won't say about abuse that they were going to do. >> and you think that ties back to the payday loan your wife took out six years ago? >> what i think is the payday loan people we called them and they said they sell the information. >> so they sell their customer list to this phony collection agency in the philippines that

then threat bens to harm your wife physically? >> yes. payday loans wants to make money any way they can. >> michael, there are times i think i've heard it all. and then you call and let me know i have not heard it all. next on "clark howard." >> i noticed that the store brand anti-dandruff shampoo was cheaper, so i got that and i really was -- my headed started itching and having dandruff problems after that.

clunkers. and really great news. not only will you get a good price on a new vehicle for almost all models out there by your trade-in again, because of cash for clunkers, should likely brink you a higher amount of dollars than it would have in the past. why? because so many cars were destroyed as part of the cash for clunkers program raising the value of your trade-in. richard is with us. you want to talk about your mom, is that right? >> caller: recently, my 90 plus year old mother came to live with me and i have been helping her out financially for well over ten years. she has -- was always very secretive about her finances, and what i have found out recently, to my shock and dismay, is that she has been playing these mail order lotteries. she lived by herself for a long time, and was -- got caught up in these lotteries overseas. >> oh, i'm so sorry.

>> caller: as a matter of fact, she has run up credit card debt totalling about $34,000. >> no! >> caller: and she has social security. she gets $923 a month but she had been -- all this social security goes out to make her monthly payments. so she's now become my dependent. should i have her declare bankruptcy, should she just stop making payments? i hope it doesn't come to the point that i'm going to have to make payments on this. >> no, there are a couple of scenarios i wanted to run by you. one is that you have no legal liability for any of these credit cards. there is no need to file for bankruptcy in this case, she has no assets. so making -- eating up her whole social security payment to service these credit cards is crazy.

now, there is something i talked about recently on the show called a hardship plan. that is something that she may be eligible for through local affiliate of the company for credit counseling. but what happens is no fees are associated with it at all and if she can pay off the balance over time, she pays off the balance. if there's an issue where a creditor may attempt to seize money in a bank account, direct deposit of social security should stop and people should go back to receiving a paper check and that's what she could do. mike is with us. you're having a problem with a bankrupt cable company? >> caller: it's bankrupt. i wasn't aware of that. yeah, back in may i was paying my bills online through my bank.

and inadvertently paid the cable company the amount i was going to use to pay off my credit card. they were one below the other and just clicked pay, until several days later the bank sent me an e-mail notifying me it had paid the bill and i looked to see that it was the cable company and i panicked. i can't get it back. and i have lost $938.70. >> you know when a company is in severe financial trouble, once they have money from you it is very, very hard to get it back. what have they said to you? have they pled poverty or what has the cable company pled about not giving you your money back? >> caller: the first time i called in may and explained to them in tears what i had done. they told me that it would take

four to six weeks to get the check back because of the amount it was. it was over a certain amount and it would take four to six weeks. when i called back after the six weeks, the certain i talked to said they didn't know what they were talking about it takes six to eight weeks. >> i'm going to do something in this case, with everything you've been through, that normally i would suggest additional steps for you. considering the fact that this is a bankrupt enterprise you're trying to get money out of with your permission i want us to call this cable operator and see if there's anything we can do to get you your money back. >> caller: i would love that. >> i don't know if you are allowed to have your money back because of the bankruptcy filing. if that is any part of why your $1,000 seems to be lost in space. but what an odd and unusual set of circumstances for you to end

up out $1,000. hang with me. next on clark howard -- >> we called your cable operator. and what happened after we called? >> caller: that afternoon, i probably received five phone calls to keep me updated on the progress. we aren't sure if we're doing nuf.

i was paying my bills online through my bank and

inadvertently paid the cable company the amount of money i was paying to pay off my credit card. and they since may have had $938.70. and i can't get it back. >> hang on just a second, because we are going to call them on your behalf and see what we can make happen for you. we called your cable operator and what happened after we called? >> caller: i got the first phone call and they asked me to send them a copy of the bank statement that shows where this amount of money had cleared. she was very clear, we don't want your account number, cross it off. so i e-mailed them the statement with it on and with the request, please keep me updated on the progress of this. that afternoon, i probably received fine phone calls to keep me updated on the progress. the first was that they had the

statement and didn't know when they would get approval for it but apologized i had waited so long. a little while later, they called back and said we have the approval, don't know how -- you should have the check by the end of the week. we'll get back to you. finally, she called back and said i've seen the check and you will have it tomorrow. it's going to be fedexed to you. i'll call you back when i have the tracking number. so she called back with the tracking number because i'm still not believing this. she calls me back with the tracking number and said i would have it wednesday morning and she would call me in the morning or on wednesday to make sure i got it. and low and behold, at 11:30 fedex showed up at my door and there was the check. >> i will tell you the truth. this is one of those cases where i think that we did make a difference and i really believe you would have never seen this money. >> caller: i'm sure i wouldn't

either. >> and i hate that it took us getting involved because my whole deal here is to give people the tools and the knowledge and the confidence to go fight your own battles. and you had done everything i could have expected of somebody and still ran into a brick wall which is why we got involved. >> caller: i so appreciate it. my hats off to you all. it's time for "money coach" where you get to ask me your money question for the goals you have in your life and see if i have a good answer for you. let's visit with dan and heather. >> my name is dan. >> my name is heather. and we need a money coach. >> we started saving for a college fund and aren't sure if we're doing enough. we started with a 529 plan and just put a little bit of money in there.

with the economy and the market going down we lost money on that and started to lock into the prepaid tuition, we're going to be paying on that for five years. >> we lopehoping we're doing the right thing. we decided to pay for our college with student loans that has hindered our opportunities now. but what more can we do to save for our child's college education? >> you have a lot of mouths to feed in that household. three children that you're going to have to raise and pay for college for. but the thing is, do you know what? you paid for your own college. you said that set you back. but the truth is, there are so many ways to pay for college. but you know what? there's only one way to pay for your retirement. love your children, you want the

best for them. but the key thing your primary focus and goal should be to beef up your savings for retirement. you need to contribute more each month to that, and then if there's money left over put it towards your kid's college and the prepaid plan or in a 529 plan. this conflict i've just talked about, do i hear this over and over and over again. when i talk with older couples whose kids are grown and i ask what have you saved for retirement and they can't look at me because they took all the money and put it towards their kid's college, remember what i've just said, your primary goal with your long-term savings is not -- it is not your kid's college. there is work there's loans, there's grants, there's scholarships, but for retirement, you got one thing, and that's you. next on "clark howard," -- >> what is it that thin vests

>> caller: doing well. thanks, clark. >> so you're watching out for your mom. >> caller: i'm trying to. >> that's a great son, watching out for her. >> caller: thank you. i'm trying to. she has subsequent to the death of my father is taking care of her financial matters. >> first, i'm sorry about the loss of your dad. >> caller: thank you. an investment adviser remitted an investment product to her, that i am somewhat skeptical of. >> tell me how old your mom is? >> caller: she's 72. >> what is it that this investment adviser is recommending to your mom. >> caller: a variable annuity. >> what! what! are you serious! >> caller: yes. >> no no no, no, no, no! that is wrong! i don't know if that individual

investment adviser is just misguided or is a dishonest individual, but there is absolutely never a circumstance never where a variable annuity would be proper for someone in her 70s. a variable annuity is a type of insurance product that has massive commissions, and massive ongoing expenses and huge what are known as surrender charges. the idea at 72 is that normally your mom is not looking for something that might generate an income for her at 100. your mom is looking for something that will cover her needs for the remainder of her lifetime. >> caller: was this advice so egregiously bad that we should take our business elsewhere? >> i would consider that because there's not even a reasonable difference of opinion

on this. flat out bad, rotten, terrible, crooked advice. our next caller, joyce, has a real dilemma. a tough one within a family. almost biblical. she has to make a decision whether she has to do what's best for her or what's best for her daughter. joyce, what's going on in your life? >> caller: okay we gave our daughter a five-acre piece of property about ten years ago, and she has put a home on it. now she has a first and second mortgage and is unable to make the payments. and they're getting ready to foreclose. with the first and second mortgage, would it be best for us to contact these folks and ask about how we can refinance it take it over, or would it be best for them to foreclose and then for us to wait until the

foreclosure takes place, would we get a better deal then? >> for your daughter, having late pays and the house being rescued by you for her short of foreclosure is much better for her credit than her going through foreclosure. >> caller: yes. >> that's number one. number two though you will be able to obtain the property after the foreclosure once it becomes real estate owned. what will happen is the holder of the second mortgage will be wiped out by the claim of the first mortgage at the foreclosure. and the foreclosure will end up in the hands of the bank that has the first it will then go into their reo department and you will be in a position in the r.e.o. department to buy the property back or potentially a lot less

than even what that first mortgage was. you would absolutely get a better deal on the property if you're quiet and wait until to goes to r.e.o. status. the only down-side risk from your per sective, we'll come back to your daughter in a second, from your perspective is if for some reason there was somebody who had his or her eye on the property and once it goes into r.e.o. they end up buying it right out from under you. how much to you want to keep your daughter out of harm's way versus how much do you want to keep this property and maybe get a good deal on it? >> those are some real difficult questions. >> they're completely different. that's the thing. we're dealing with an ethical dilemma, a family dilemma here. i mean, that's really a call for you to make. if you would like to step in and prevent the financial harm that

comes with a foreclosure to your daughter, know that you will have to pay pretty much the full balance on the loan. you're not going to get large concessions if you step in. after the fact, you may pick up the property for who knows half of what the outstanding balance is. >> yes. that's what we probably should do? >> well and that is the decision that you've got to make. next on "clark howard" -- >> you spent these years living well below your income and it made a permanent change in how you handle money in your life by toughing it out, paying it off.

but the day before that one of our eye reporters said she saw something really spooky. what she saw on a visit to the queen mary. speaking of tips, the world's largest cruise liner has unusual features. what the oasis of the seas has to do to go under a bridge. hello welcome to hln "news and views" on first sunday in november. i'm melissa long. a seattle police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty overnight. at a news conference early this morning a police spokesman described what happened. >> they were going over some training when the car pulled up alongside of them and began shooting. the student officer in the driver's seat ducked, was able to avoid any serious injury and the gunshots did kill the officer. the car backed away and the

student officer exited the patrol patrolcar and began shooting and returning fire to the suspect vike. >> the attack happened in the city's mostly residential central district. police say the other officer in the car suffered minor injuries. this is the first time a seattle officer has died in the line of duty since 2006. police in cleveland say the six decomposing bodies found in a suspected rapist home were all female and victims of suicide. anthony soul was arrested on rape charges. when police arrested him they found the bodies. authorities are checking missing persons reports dating back to june of 2005, trying to learn the identity of the victims. he was released from prison in 2005 after serving 15 years for rape. crews are conducting stress tests and modification work on the san francisco oakland-bay bridge but it isn't clear when the bridge will re-open. the california department of

transportation is suggesting commuters find alternate routes to get across the bay tomorrow. >> we wish we could open the bridge sooner than we have to. this is not something we're feeling pressure to do. safety is the prime concern here and we won't open the bridge until everyone feels it's safe to do so. >> the bridge has been closed since tuesday night, when two rods and a cross bar installed over labor day weekend to repair a crack failed, sending 5,000 pounds of metal into rush hour traffic. rescuers say there is no more reason to hope any survivors will be found. three days of a coast guard plane and marine helicopter collided they're ending the search for nine missing people off the coast of san diego. witnesses say a massive fireball fell into the pacific ocean after the collision. >> we looked at the time that was involved. we looked at the nature of the collision, itself. we exhaustively searched the area where we would have found them if there was anybody who

depart from cyprus for athens, grooerks greece, had an unexpected delay last night. the jet was set to take off when a 28-year-old man opened a rear exit and slid down an emergency chute. he jumped the airport fence and disappeared. authorities don't know why he bolted from the plane but they have issued an arrest warrant for him. a senior adviser to president obama says the supply of the h1n1 vaccine will catch up to the demand within a week. david axelrod says vaccine makers were mistaken when they told the administration they would have 40 million doses ready near the end of october. the read number was 28 million doses. thousands of people including some from canada jammed clinics in washington to get vaccinated free of charge. one of our frequent i-reporters is creeped out by something that happened during a victim to the queen marion long beach harbor.

over a month. this storm has killed 20 people. four others are missing. typhoon mirinae is moving over the south china sea and expected to hit the central coast of vietnam tomorrow. another killed 160 people in vietnam during late september. at least seven people died in attacks across iraq today. 40 miles south of baghdad, a bomb strapped to a motorcycle exploded in the crowded marketplace killing at least five people. at least 37 people were injured in that attack. in the western city of ramadi two people died when two separate car bombs detonated near the headquarters of traffic police. eight others were wounded in that attack. iraqi authorities say the suspect in a deadly bombing killed someone during a police interrogation. the interior ministry says he grabbed a gun from a guard and shot an investigator. the investigator wrestled the gun back and shot the suspect.

they both died of gunshot wounds. the suspect also wounded the guard he took the gun from. investigators were questioning him about last sunday's bombing in baghdad that killed at least 160 people. that was iraq's deadliest bombing since 2007. iranian president mahmoud ahmadinejad compares the power of his country's enemies to that of a mosquito. ahmadinejad's comments comes as iran negotiates with the west over his nuclear program. a u.n. plan would require iran to send a ton of year rain yum to russia. it would be processed there and sent back to iran to use in a research reactor but not in nuclear weapons. polanski's attorney is ready to file a new bail offer that includes a very significant cash amount. he wouldn't say how much. swiss authorities rejected a fail offer friday because they consider the 76-year-old filmmaker a flight risk. the earlier offer was not in cash.

polanski was arrested in late november wanted in america for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in los angeles in 1977. the world's largest cruise ship is so big it had to lower its smoke snacks in order to squeeze under a bridge. it's tough to see in the nighttime video but the oasis of the seas just cleared the bridge in denmark. it skimmed underneath with two feet to spare. the ship is five times larger than the titanic, has seven neighborhoods and can hold 6,300 passengers. it will make its u.s. debut at its home port port everglades in florida, on the 20th of november. here are some of the stories covering in the coming days. tomorrow is world pneumonia day. global events call attention to the deadliest children's disease, blamed for 15 childhood deaths every second. voters will be heading to the polls for off-year elections in several states. virginia and new jersey choosing governors and mayor seeking a

stories, intimate personal stories. if you're like me you'll be inspired by these stories and be motivated to do something for yourself and those you love. that's where we begin with hope against medicine's greatest challenge. >> cancer has four stages of disease. the majority of us black people come for treatment when we are already at stage 3 or stage 4, very close to death. it is your education that will save your life. to stand up -- >> reporter: mo botsi of south africa is the embodiment of hope and vitality in the face of cancer. she's a vocal breast cancer survivor, a rarity in south africa's black community, where breast disease is a major taboo subject. she's speaking to secondary

schoolchildren, both boys and girls. >> you can put water or soap. i need you to help me go out there and educate your mamas your grand mothers, your neighbors. >> reporter: in a country where women defer their health care choices to their husband, she feels including boys will support women down the road. >> i was doing a breast examination, the first one ever in my life i had done one. i had this tiny lump. i went and sought medical advice and i was told this is a very friendly lump, don't worry about it, you are young. >> reporter: told you not to worry? >> don't worry. it was cancer. that's what drives me to talk about the disease. to say to women know your body insist on medical treatment, don't rest until you know for sure.

>> reporter: the johannes township, here botsi says the stigma of cancer prevents women from getting care that could save their lives. >> there are lots of social cultural financial issues that mitigate against uneducated black women. >> reporter: patients sometimes tone down chemotherapy for fear of being shunned by neighbors who mistake the treatment's side effects with aids. >> women have chosen i think -- not i think, i know, for sure to die rather than live with a stigma. women are scared to have mastectomies because they're going to be left by their husbands. >> reporter: a woman's body is not her own? >> it's a -- >> reporter: it's her husband's? >> it's an abuse of culture.

medical, we used to pay in cows and now we pay in cash. the more educated the her expensive you are. men start thinking, i paid $50,000 rent for her. therefore, she belongs to me. and that's what complicates the issue of women's abuse. >> reporter: here at the hospital, botsi works to destigmatize breast cancer and give what she calls a, quote positive black face. >> i lived with breast cancer 18 months without seeing a black woman that was prepared to speak openly about the disease. remember what i said last week, not every lump is cancer. >> reporter: the hospital has more beds than any other in the world, but the cancer clinic for hundreds of women is sparse manned by only two doctors who do not speak the women's languages. >> i'm very excited today for the first time we see women in

gowns. i mean, these are very basic things. there's no privacy so we are fighting for big items like machines but also facing very real basic human rights needs like just the dignity to have your body covered as a patient. >> i believe that by showing my scars and being a voice gives the women hope. they can see somebody brown like them has walked that path and that i'm standing there to say you're going to be okay. the results can be positive. the results can be negative. we need to start educating and realize that we're not necessarily going to die when we have cancer. i'm sitting here talking to you. i'm around, but it's because of education. >> inspiring a lot of people,

rick light says they are also great places to break down the stigma and fear often associated with prostate cancer. how are you doing? >> good. >> reporter: thanks for meeting me here. can't do an interview in a pub with a tie on i think. this is where you end up talking to a lot of people about prostate cancer right? >> i do. >> reporter: why here? >> you know, beer's a universal language for men, so i have prostate cancer in '08 and i find that you know where women get together and talk about health issues, men really don't. we try to use an atmosphere like the pub where guys are relaxed. >> reporter: why do you suppose men are more reluctant to talk about this? it's our bodies a male cancer. >> i think men want to ignore the possibility of that, of prostate cancer. you know, it's fear. >> reporter: what happened to you? how did you find out you had prostate cancer? >> i was 47 years old. a good friend of mine, a

colleague at work, had prostate cancer, and he just sort of urged me to get tested. >> reporter: when you told your doctor, look i'm worried about prostate cancer, i'm only 47 years old, what did your doctor say? he asked do you have signs, symptom symptoms? i say no, i feel fine. he did a manual exam and said, no, you're okay. so i said, okay, well you're sending me down for bloodwork, i'm going to get a psa test, right? he said, you don't need it. i told him about my friend and he said well your insurance probably won't pay for it because you're not 50 years old yet. i said how much is that test, doc? he said $75. check the box. we're going to get it tested. my psa should have been 0.4 and the results came back 11.1. >> reporter: what's the reaction in a setting like this and you bring up psas and prostates? >> we go to beer festivals, too, and have booths at beer festivals. people walking around getting beer samples and mechanically as

they come to each booth stick their glass out for their next sample and walk up to ours and see the sign and recoil a little bit and look at you like what are you doing here? some of those people walk away and five minutes later they come back and, you know, they're saying gee, my dad has prostate cancer or my grandfather died of prostate cancer and you start having a conversation. >> my dad's a survivor. >> i am, too. i had surgery last year. >> he did, too. >> it's amazing how many men who have had the disease in their family don't realize if you have that family history your chances of having prostate cancer go up tremendously. >> reporter: who's your most likely target as far as hearing your message? >> there are a lot of guys who come up to the table who are in their 40s. >> need to know what your psa is. >> come up and say, i have to worry about this when i turn 50. i said let me tell you my story. immediately, you know, there's a reaction and a lot of them say, well, i'm going to go in and get checked. >> with an organization like

a grim night in seattle as one of the city's police officers is gunned down in the line of duty. what authorities are saying happened. halloween was last night, but the day before that one of our i-reporters says she saw something really spooky. what she saw on a visit to the queen mary. speaking of ships, the

world's largest cruise liner has unusual features. what the oasis of the seas has to do to go under a bridge. hello, welcome to hln "news and views" on first sunday in november. i'm melissa long. a seattle police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty overnight. at a news conference early this morning a police spokesman described what happened. >> they were going over some training when the car pulled up alongside of them and began shooting. the student officer in the driver's seat ducked, was able to avoid any serious injury, and the gunshots did kill the officer. the car backed away and the student officer exited the patrol car and began shooting and returning fire to the suspect vehicle. >> the attack happened in the city's mostly residential central district.

police say the other officer in the car suffered minor injuries. this is the first time a seattle officer has died in the line of duty since 2006. police in cleveland say the six decomposing bodies found in a suspected rapist home were all female and all victims of homicide. anthony soul was arrested on rape and assault charges. when police arrested him they found the bodies. authorities are checking missing persons reports dating back to june of 2005, trying to learn the identity of the victims. soul was released from prison in 2005 after serving 15 years for rape. crews are conducting stress tests and modification work on the san francisco oakland-bay bridge but it isn't clear when the bridge will re-open. the california department of transportation is suggesting commuters find alternate routes to get across the bay tomorrow. >> we wish we could open the bridge sooner than we have to. this is not something we're feeling pressure to do.

safety is the prime concern here and we won't open the bridge until everyone feels it's safe to do so. >> the bridge has been closed since tuesday night, when two rods and a cross bar installed over labor day weekend to repair a crack failed, sending 5,000 pounds of metal into rush hour traffic. rescuers say there is no more reason to hope any survivors will be found. three days after a coast guard plane and marine helicopter collided they're ending the search for nine missing people off the coast of san diego. witnesses say a massive fireball fell into the pacific ocean after the collision. >> we looked at the time that was involved. we looked at the nature of the collision, itself. we exhaustively searched the area where we would have found them if there was anybody who could have survived it. you look at the cold water exposure models. as far as the time goes. when you put all those pieces together we no longer believe there's any chance somebody could be alive. >> search crews made one pass of

the scene this morning. family members were told last night the effort would be abandoned after that sweep was ended. the only challenger is pulling out. abdullah abdullah claims next saturday will be just as rigged as the initial voting. >> decide this country and city will be through elections. my message is loud and clear to the enemies of democratic process. and through all of our commitment to these principles and values, we will disappoint anybody who would like to become an obstacle to us, the process. >> a government commissioner arranged the runoff after finding large-scale vote fraud in the august presidential election. incumbent hamid karzai claimed victory. secretary of state hillary clinton says the runoff vote will be legitimate without the opposition leader taking part. abdullah's withdrawal from the runoff election comes as
